Physician Assistants


In accordance with the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), physician assistants must complete 24 hours of specialized training to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder. The training includes 8 hours of free MAT waiver training and an additional free 16 hours of training.

Step 1

Complete 24 hours of MAT coursework.

You can complete the first 8 hours of MAT training entirely online, in-person, or half in-person and half-online. In-person events are held periodically, so please contact us to find out when the next in-person training event will be held. Complete the remaining 16 hours of MAT coursework online.


Step 2

Complete your Notification of Intent (NOI) Form

Once you have completed the 8 hours of training, complete your NOI online and submit it to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for review. Before starting this application, please make sure you have: Your DEA Number, Your State License Number, and Your Training Certificate Information. Step 3

Forward your Certificate of Completion to SAMHSA.

After you’ve completed Steps 1-2 above, PCSS-MAT will send you via email your certificate of completion for the 8 hour training.Email these to infobuprenorphine@samhsa.hhs.gov.

Within 45 days, you will receive your DEA X waiver.
